Balane Mail

Email for your IMAP accounts, with a unified inbox and offline reading.

Balane Mail is the email app of Balane Office. It handles any number of IMAP and SMTP accounts and detects the server settings of common providers. Connections are encrypted only, over TLS or STARTTLS. The unified inbox brings all accounts together and sorts mail into Personal, Notifications and Newsletters on the device. Messages can be read offline, and whatever you do without a connection is carried out later. There's also full-text search, pinning, reminders and archiving. Remote images stay blocked until you allow them, and tracking pixels are removed. You can attach files from other Balane apps. AI features are optional and use your own API key. Credentials stay in the device keychain, messages are cached locally, and no Balane account is required. For Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows. Balane Office is a project that shows how far an office suite can be taken with AI-assisted development. The apps are free and fully usable.

Balane Mail

All your mailboxes in one place

Balane Mail handles any number of IMAP and SMTP accounts. Setup usually needs just your address and password: the app knows the server settings for iCloud, Gmail, Outlook.com, GMX, WEB.DE, IONOS, Telekom, Posteo, mailbox.org, Yahoo and Fastmail, and looks them up itself for other domains. Where a provider requires an app password, it tells you. Connections are encrypted only.

Inbox

The inbox brings all accounts together and sorts messages into Personal, Notifications and Newsletters on the device. You screen new senders once and allow or block them. Pinning, reminders, archiving and swipe gestures are included. Conversations are grouped, with older messages and quotes collapsed.

Read offline, write at your own pace

Messages are stored locally so you can read and search them offline. Whatever you do without a connection, the app carries out once you're back online. For writing there's formatted text, signatures per account, templates, undo send and send later.

Less tracking

The app shows HTML messages without JavaScript. Remote images stay blocked until you allow them for a message or a sender, and tracking pixels it recognizes are removed even then. The app shows how many there were.

Search and keyboard

Full-text search runs as you type and understands operators such as from:, subject: or has:attachment. The app is built for the keyboard, with shortcuts for common actions and a command search.

AI only when you switch it on

With your own Anthropic API key, the AI summarizes a conversation, picks out tasks and dates, drafts a reply, checks the tone, translates or shortens. It only changes the text and subject of a draft; it cannot send, delete or move anything. Without a key the AI is off.

Part of Balane Office

You attach files from other Balane apps directly and insert ranges from Sheets or Reports as text into a draft.

— Questions & answers

Common questions.

How much does Balane Mail cost?

Nothing. Balane Mail is free and fully usable, with no subscription and no in-app purchases.

Do I need a Balane account?

No. All you need are the credentials for your email accounts. There is no Balane sign-in.

Where are my passwords and messages stored?

Passwords are kept in the system keychain or key store, never in files. Messages are cached on the device so you can read and search them offline. Connections go to your accounts' mail servers, always encrypted. No Balane server is involved.

Can I sign in with my Google or Microsoft account?

Not yet. Sign-in with Google or Microsoft (OAuth) is prepared in the protocol layer but not yet switched on in the app. You set up accounts with your address and password; where a provider requires an app password for that, the app tells you during setup.

Do I have to use the AI?

No. The AI features stay off until you add your own Anthropic API key in the settings. Requests then go directly from your device to Anthropic (or to an Anthropic-compatible service you enter yourself), containing only what the app puts together for that request, and are billed to your key. Nothing the AI suggests is applied until you accept it. Without a key, the app is fully usable.

Does Balane Mail run on Windows too?

Yes. On Windows, Balane Mail is in the Microsoft Store. Installed from there, it skips the SmartScreen dialog and updates itself. If you don't use the Store, the same build is available as a signed direct installer here.
