Balane Paperwork

View, annotate, fill in, sign and redact PDF files.

Balane Paperwork edits existing PDF files and is part of Balane Office. You open a PDF, including password-protected ones, and read it with zoom, thumbnails, outline and search. You annotate with highlighter, notes, text boxes, pen and shapes. You fill in forms, sign by drawing, typing or from an image, and add stamps. Pages can be merged, reordered, rotated, deleted and extracted. When you redact, the app rebuilds the affected pages on export so the content underneath is really gone. It displays ZUGFeRD and XRechnung e-invoices in readable form. All edits are kept in a working file (.bpaper) and can be undone; only the export writes a new PDF. Everything stays on the device, and no account is required. For Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows. Balane Office is a project that shows how far an office suite can be taken with AI-assisted development. The apps are free and fully usable.

Balane Paperwork

For PDFs that already exist

Balane Paperwork edits existing PDF files: view, annotate, fill in, sign, rearrange pages and redact. You write long texts in Balane Docs and bring them here as a PDF; Paperwork doesn't reflow body text.

Reading

PDFs open even when password-protected. The reading view has zoom, thumbnails, an outline, search, text selection and links.

Annotating

Highlight, underline, strikethrough, notes, text boxes, pen and shapes such as rectangle, ellipse, line and arrow. You set color, thickness and opacity, and a comment list shows everything at a glance. On export they become real PDF annotations.

Filling in and signing

You fill in PDF forms (AcroForm) on the “Form” tab and export them with the fields filled in or flattened. You sign by drawing, typing or from an image, and you can add stamps. This is not a qualified electronic signature.

Rearranging pages

In the page overview you reorder, rotate, delete and insert pages, merge several PDFs and extract pages.

Redacting

Redacted areas are really gone on export: the app rebuilds the affected pages and removes metadata and annotations of the sources.

E-invoices

The app displays ZUGFeRD and Factur-X invoices inside a PDF, as well as XRechnung XML, in readable form, runs a basic check and passes the data on as CSV or a dataset.

Nothing gets lost

Every edit is a step in the .bpaper working file and can be undone. The original stays unchanged; only the export writes a new PDF. The app needs no network and no account.

— Questions & answers

Common questions.

How much does Balane Paperwork cost?

Nothing. Balane Paperwork is free and fully usable, with no subscription and no in-app purchases.

Do I need an account?

No. There's no sign-in and no Balane account. You open the app and start.

Where are my files stored?

On your device. Paperwork opens no network connection of its own; the original PDF and your edits live in the working file, and the export writes the result as a new PDF. If a file sits in a folder that iCloud Drive, OneDrive or another service syncs, that service carries it under its own terms.

Is the signature a qualified electronic signature?

No. Paperwork places a drawn, typed or image-based signature on the PDF, as you would on paper. The app doesn't create a qualified electronic signature backed by a certificate.

Does Balane Paperwork run on Windows too?

Yes. On Windows, Balane Paperwork is in the Microsoft Store. Installed from there, it skips the SmartScreen dialog and updates itself. If you don't use the Store, the same build is available as a signed direct installer here.
