Balane Reports

Analyze data from CSV, XLSX and SQLite and present it as a report.

Balane Reports analyzes data and presents it in reports. Data comes from CSV, XLSX, SQLite (read-only) and from datasets of other Balane apps. Query steps shape it, and calculated columns, relationships and measures build on it. Report pages hold charts, KPI cards, tables and matrices, and filters and slicers apply across all visuals. Exports go to PDF, PNG and CSV, and on phones and tablets each page has its own layout. AI features are optional and use your own API key; the numbers are always calculated by the app itself. Reports are stored on your device as .breport files, and no account is required. For Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows. Balane Office is a project that shows how far an office suite can be taken with AI-assisted development. The apps are free and fully usable.

Balane Reports

Turning tables into reports

Balane Reports analyzes data and presents it. You connect a source, shape the data in query steps and build report pages from it with charts, KPI cards and tables.

Data sources

  • CSV and XLSX, including workbooks with several sheets.
  • SQLite, read-only: the app doesn't change the database.
  • Balane datasets and published data from other Balane apps, such as responses from Balane Forms, which update along with the source.

Modeling

Query steps filter, shape and combine the data. Calculated columns, relationships between tables and measures build on it. Function names work in English and German, SUM as well as SUMME.

Report pages

Charts, KPI cards, tables, matrices and slicers. Clicking into one visual filters the others, and drill-down takes you into the details. Snapshots can be kept and compared. On phones and tablets each page has its own layout, and there's a presentation and reading mode.

Output

Export to PDF, PNG and CSV or as a dataset for other Balane apps, and print through the system dialog. Reports are stored on your device as .breport files.

AI only when you switch it on

With your own Anthropic API key you can ask questions of your data. The AI suggests measures, query steps, filters and visuals; the numbers themselves are always calculated by the app. Without a key the AI is off.

— Questions & answers

Common questions.

How much does Balane Reports cost?

Nothing. Balane Reports is free and fully usable, with no subscription and no in-app purchases.

Do I need an account?

No. There's no sign-in and no Balane account. You open the app and start.

Where is my data stored?

On your device. A report is a .breport file, and the source files stay where they are; the app only reads SQLite databases. If a file sits in a folder that iCloud Drive, OneDrive or another service syncs, that service carries it under its own terms. Nothing goes to Balane.

Do I have to use the AI?

No. The AI features stay off until you add your own Anthropic API key in the settings. Requests then go directly from your device to Anthropic (or to an Anthropic-compatible service you enter yourself), containing only what the app puts together for that request, and are billed to your key. Nothing the AI suggests is applied until you accept it. Without a key, the app is fully usable.

Does Balane Reports run on Windows too?

Yes. On Windows, Balane Reports is in the Microsoft Store. Installed from there, it skips the SmartScreen dialog and updates itself. If you don't use the Store, the same build is available as a signed direct installer here.
