The Second Look

Catch embarrassing document mistakes before your client does.

The Second Look is the second look at your document before it goes out — a fully local Word add-in for law firms. Before you send, it catches the small things that make a partner lose confidence in you: wrong client, inconsistent defined terms, conflicting case numbers, leftover placeholders, broken cross-references and exhibits, wrong signature block, open comments, tracked changes, numbering gaps, mixed date formats, metadata and hidden content. It flags — you decide; fixes happen only on confirmation, your text stays yours. German, Austrian, Swiss, UK or US contracts, in any language. No legal assessment, no cloud, no AI at runtime, no document transmission, no storage.

What slips through is never the legal question

The brief is solid, the argument lands. And on the way out, something slips through that no one should see — the wrong party name on page 12, the case number that doesn't match the rest, the defined term spelled three different ways, the signature block left over from the last deal. None of it takes legal expertise, just two seconds of inattention. And these are exactly the small things that make a partner lose confidence in you — and a client lose confidence in the firm.

That's what The Second Look is for: the second look at the document before you hit "Send".

What it checks

One click in the Word add-in checks the document against the mistakes experienced associates name again and again:

Send-blockers

  • Parties & client — is the opponent, defendant or client still named on page 12 the way they were on page 3? Is there a stray company from the template sitting in the text?
  • Defined terms — used before they're defined, never defined, or spelled inconsistently
  • Case numbers — a typo, or a file number from another matter wandering through the document
  • Leftover placeholders — `[CLIENT]`, `XXX`, template residue
  • Exhibits & cross-references — a reference to an exhibit or clause that doesn't exist
  • Signature block — wrong signatory, missing party

Before it leaves the building

  • Open comments and tracked changes someone can still read
  • Metadata and hidden content that ships with the file
  • Numbering gaps, mixed date formats and inconsistent formatting

The list keeps growing — but it only ever answers one question: is this document clean, consistent and ready to send? The Second Look does not assess legal quality and gives no legal advice.

Findings by severity — critical, notice, style — each linking to the exact spot
Findings by severity — critical, notice, style — each linking to the exact spot

Find, don't rewrite — you decide

The Second Look is not an AI formatter and not a ghostwriter. It never changes anything silently. Every finding takes you to the exact spot, shows you precisely what would change, and waits for your OK. Changing a name, a date or a defined term can shift the meaning — that call stays yours. The tool is perfect at finding; fixes happen only on confirmation, with one click. Your text stays yours.

Any language, any jurisdiction

German, Austrian, Swiss, UK or US contract — in any language. A German GmbH inside an English-language agreement is caught just like a Swiss SA, a UK Ltd or an Austrian OG. Detection is not tied to the document's language — because a German firm writes English contracts too.

Fully local. No cloud risk.

For law firms this is the core: the document does not leave your device. No cloud, no AI at runtime, no transmission, no storage — the check runs entirely inside the add-in on your machine.

That also means: no data processing agreement required, no debate with your data protection officer about third-country transfers. Client confidentiality stays client confidentiality.

Who it's for

For law firms, legal departments and anyone who regularly sends formal documents where an embarrassing slip gets expensive. The Second Look doesn't replace your professional final review — it catches what that review tends to overlook: the details.

How it works

  1. Install the add-in in Word and activate it.
  2. Open a document and run The Second Look.
  3. Walk through the findings — each linking to the exact spot, many with one-click fixes — and send clean.

The Second Look – License Agreement (EULA)

Last updated: 2026-06-05 Provider: Balane GmbH · support@balane.tech

This agreement governs the use of the Word add-in "The Second Look" (the "Software"). By purchasing, installing or using the Software you agree to these terms.

The offering is directed exclusively at businesses (entrepreneurs within the meaning of § 14 German Civil Code), legal entities under public law and special funds under public law. It is not directed at consumers (§ 13 German Civil Code). By purchasing, you confirm that you are acting in the exercise of your commercial or independent professional activity.

1. Sale and contracting party

The purchase of the Software is processed by Lemon Squeezy (Lemon Squeezy LLC) acting as Merchant of Record. The purchase contract (payment, VAT, invoice, withdrawal/refund) is therefore concluded with Lemon Squeezy and governed by their buyer terms. This agreement governs solely the license to use the Software granted by the provider (Balane GmbH).

2. Scope of license

You receive a non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the Software for your own business purposes, tied to an annual subscription. The license is unlocked via a license key and remains valid for the duration of the active subscription. The number of devices that may be activated concurrently follows the activation limit stated at purchase.

You may not:

  • decompile, reverse-engineer or disassemble the Software, except where permitted by mandatory law;
  • rent, lease, resell or sublicense it;
  • share the license key with third parties;
  • modify it or create derivative works.

All rights not expressly granted are reserved.

3. Processing and confidentiality

The Second Look runs fully locally: document content is checked solely on your device. There is no transmission, storage or processing of document content by the provider or any third party. No AI services are used at runtime. Accordingly, no data processing on behalf of the user within the meaning of the GDPR takes place with respect to the checked documents; a data processing agreement (DPA) is not required.

To validate the license, the Software transmits the license key to Lemon Squeezy (license validation). No document content is transmitted in this process.

4. No warranty / limitation of liability

The Second Look checks documents for formal and consistency issues before sending (e.g. leftover placeholders, open comments, tracked changes, metadata, formatting). The Software:

  • does not guarantee detection of all errors or issues;
  • does not assess substantive or legal quality and does not constitute legal advice;
  • does not replace the user's own professional final review of the document.

Responsibility for the content and the sending of a document remains entirely with the user. Liability of the provider for undetected errors and for damage arising from sending a document is excluded to the extent permitted by law.

Otherwise, the provider is liable without limitation only for intent and gross negligence and for injury to life, body or health. For ordinary negligence the provider is liable only for breach of a material contractual obligation and limited in amount to the foreseeable damage typical for this type of contract.

5. Term and termination

The Software is offered as an annual subscription preceded by a 7-day free trial. Unless cancelled before the trial ends, the subscription converts into a paid annual subscription and renews automatically for further one-year terms unless cancelled by the end of the current period. Management and cancellation are available at any time via the Lemon Squeezy customer portal; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period. When the subscription ends, the license ends.

6. Final provisions

This agreement is governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany. Should individual provisions be invalid, the validity of the remaining provisions remains unaffected.

Privacy Policy – The Second Look

Last updated: 2026-06-10 · Provider: Balane GmbH · support@balane.tech

The Second Look is a fully local Word add-in. It is built so that your documents never leave your device.

1. Document content

  • Checking runs entirely locally inside the add-in on your device.
  • There is no transmission, no storage and no processing of document content by the provider or any third party.
  • No AI services are used at runtime.
  • No data processing agreement (DPA under Art. 28 GDPR) is required with respect to the checked documents.

2. Purchase and license

The purchase is handled by Lemon Squeezy (Lemon Squeezy LLC) as Merchant of Record. Lemon Squeezy processes the data required for purchase, invoicing and VAT (e.g. name, email address, payment data, country) as an independent controller. Lemon Squeezy's privacy policy applies.

To validate the license, the add-in transmits the license key to Lemon Squeezy. No document content is transmitted.

3. Anonymous usage statistics

When you click “Check”, the add-in sends a content-free counting ping to our self-hosted Umami instance (cookieless, no cross-site tracking, hosted on Railway). The only information transmitted is that a check was started — no document content, no findings, no input and no identifiers added by us. The IP address technically associated with any web request is not stored by Umami; it is processed transiently to answer the request.

The legal basis is our legitimate interest in minimal usage measurement (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). You can disable the counting at any time in the add-in’s settings (“Anonymous usage statistics”).

4. Website balane.app

The general privacy policy additionally applies to your use of this website.

5. Your rights

You have the rights granted under the GDPR (access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, portability). Contact: support@balane.tech
